Halflings

A halfling explores with scimitar and boomerang

"In their homeland, halflings are nomads who ride domesticated dinosaurs across the wide plains. The heritage of the nomad also serves more urbanized halflings well, and halflings have established themselves across Khorvaire as merchants, politicians, barristers, healers, and criminals. The tribal nomads of the plains can sometimes be found in the cities, but often the halflings of the cities blend in with the rest of the population and display only the occasional reminder of their nomadic roots."1

"Although small in stature, halflings make surprisingly dangerous warriors and gifted spellcasters. Quick, capable, and adaptable, halflings have found wealth and adventure among the nations of Khorvaire. Their focus on readiness and self-reliance keeps them ready to face whatever challenges arise."

"From their humble beginnings in the wilds of the Talenta Plains, today halflings can be found throughout the Five Nations and beyond. Originally from a nomadic culture, halflings often attempt to keep their personal possessions to a minimum. Possessions are not nearly as important as friends and family. Many halflings of the Five Nations retain the emphasis that Talenta halflings place on loyalty to family; many equate close friends to family and show extreme loyalty to both."

"Halflings often adventure out of loyalty to their companions—both their natural dispositions and the remnants of the Talenta culture make halflings keenly aware of the value of close friendships. Their loyalty and healthy sense of adventure make halflings dedicated and resilient adventuring companions, and their predilection for stealth and self-reliance makes them excellent survivors."2

In their great migration halflings have become differentiated into two noted cultures: Talentan halflings and City halflings. (See 'Halfling cultures', below.)

Description

Physique: Halflings stand about 3 feet tall and weigh on average 40 pounds. Their skin is ruddy, their hair brown or black and straight. They have brown or black eyes. Their men often have long sideburns, but beards are rare among them and mustaches almost unseen. Their women favor elaborate braids, some with coded meanings known only to other halflings. Halflings favor simple, comfortable, and practical clothes in traditional Talentan designs.

Age. Halflings reach adulthood at age 20. They hit middle age around 60 and are considered old past age 90.

Size. A halfling's size is Small. To set your height and weight randomly, start with rolling a size modifier:

Size modifier = 2d4
Height = 2 feet 7 inches + size modifier in inches
Weight = 30 lb + (1d4 lb × size modifier)

They write very little, so they don’t have a rich body of literature. Their oral tradition, however, is very strong. Almost all halflings speak Common to converse with the people in whose lands they dwell or through which they are traveling.

Halfling Cultures

These are the principle ethnicities of the halflings of Khorvaire. You do not need to pick one of these. If you want your halfling to be from somewhere else where halflings live some other kind of a way, that's fine. That said if you prefer to pick from predefined choices here are two.

City Halflings

"In the cities of the Five Nations, generations of halflings have grown up without ever seeing their ancient homeland. Some have a connection to one of the two halfling-controlled dragonmarked houses, but most are nonaffiliated, having made their way to the great cities in search of fame and fortune— or being the descendant of someone who did. Some code-switch, moving with ease between the “city culture” and the traditions of the Talenta Plains, although they usually carry small reminders of their ancestors’ culture. A few city halflings try to adopt the traditions of their ancestors and bring the Talenta Plains into the “civilized” regions."2

Talentan Halflings

"Talenta halflings present an imposing image as savage masked hunters and deadly dinosaur riders. They roam the plains that are their namesake, travelling through these rolling, arid grasslands in the traditional tribal units much as halflings have done for thousands of years. To avoid slowing themselves or their dinosaur mounts, Talenta halflings carry few possessions. Hunting is a powerful concept in Talenta halfling culture, and all halflings in a tribe are considered hunters despite what their daily duties might be. When they don their hunter’s masks, Talenta halfling adventurers make prey of enemies, herding foes into traps and harrying villains with surprise attacks. Most of the world views Talenta halflings as strange and savage."2
