Humans

A human inquisitive

Humans are the most adaptable and ambitious race of Eberron, though their drive sometimes brings them to disaster. Across Khorvaire, humans forged powerful dragonmarked houses and strong political alliances; yet their ambition also ignited the Last War, a century-long conflict that came to naught. Humanity's numbers have dwindled substantially from the war's dire toll, limiting the dominance they once had over other races.

Despite their diminished numbers, humans remain, and they're determined to rebuild from the ashes of the war. They strive to reclaim their legacy and redefine their role in a transformed world. Their adaptability has always been their greatest strength— a trait more vital now than ever as they navigate the shifting alliances and uncertain loyalties of post-war Khorvaire. Even in decline, their influence is solid and their impact undeniable. Human ambition, courage, and ingenuity are legendary, but so too are their darker impulses—greed, prejudice, and a hunger for power.

In the aftermath of the Last War, humans stand at a crossroads. Though their dominance is diminished, they still hold immense potential. It remains to be seen whether humanity will learn from its past mistakes and forge a brighter future or if history is destined to repeat itself, plunging Eberron into darkness once more.

Five main nationalities of humans dwell in Khorvaire: Aundairian humans, Brelish humans, Cyran humans, Karrnath humans, and Thranish humans. (See 'Human Nationalities' below.)

Human Nationalities

These are the principle nationalities of Eberron humans. You do not need to pick one of these. If you want your human to be from somewhere else where humans live some other kind of a way, that's fine. That said if you prefer to pick from predefined choices here are five.

Aundairian Humans

Aundairian humans are known throughout the Five Nations for their keen intellect, cultural sophistication, and inherent talent for the arcane arts. These traits have been shaped by generations of magical scholarship and the educational influence of the renowned Arcane Congress. They are proud of their intellectual heritage, and they prize knowledge and creativity, often pursuing careers as wizards, magewrights, scholars, and artisans. Alongside their cultural traditions, they are equally practical. They know the value of blending magic into daily life, from everbright lanterns lighting their streets to enchanted farming tools working their fertile fields.

Brelish Humans

Brelish humans embody adaptability, ingenuity, and entrepreneurial spirit, shaped by living in the diverse and rapidly evolving Brelish society centered as it is around innovation and industry. They are pragmatic, creative and resourceful. They place a high value on personal freedoms, individual accomplishment, and resilience. Their appearance and mannerisms often reflect a pragmatic simplicity, favoring functional attire and equipment over unnecessary ornamentation. Even so, Brelish inventors, artificers, and merchants are ever coming up with clever creations and practical enchantments.

Cyran Humans

Cyran humans are renowned for their creativity, artistry, and idealistic drive to blend the best traits from all across Khorvaire into a single vibrant culture. Cyrans have always prided themselves on their artistic and magical achievements. They celebrate magic not merely as a tool, but as a profound form of expression woven into music, architecture, fashion, and cuisine. Their culture places great emphasis on personal identity, refined taste, and aesthetic sensibility.

Cyran humans have been shaped by tragedy and resilience, as many now striving to preserve and rebuild their cultural legacy following the loss of their homeland. The destruction they suffered, known as the Mourning, has made Cyrans a scattered yet determined people, fiercely protective of their traditions and memories.

Karrnathi Humans

Karrnathi humans are known throughout the Five Nations for their strength, discipline, and military prowess. These traits have been shaped by centuries of martial tradition, their nation's harsh climates, and their culture's values of order, duty, and nationalism. They typically display hardy physiques, stern features, and a serious, determined demeanor shaped by mandatory military training. They wear functional, practical clothing, often favoring dark colors and robust materials that withstand the demands of military life and their rugged homeland. Karrnathi society prizes honor, tradition, and the structured pursuit of excellence. They frequently excel as soldiers, commanders, blacksmiths, strategists, and artisans.

Thranish Humans

Thrane humans are typically spiritual, driven by devotion to the Silver Flame and a conviction to uphold the ideals of their religion in their everyday lives. Thrane humans typically display a serious yet compassionate demeanor, often characterized by a sense of purpose and inner clarity derived from their faith. They favor modest, practical clothing often decorated with symbols of the Silver Flame, simple yet dignified styles reflecting their spirituality commitment and humility. Their culture is shaped by daily rituals, prayers, and practices designed to maintain spiritual purity and vigilance; and their society encourages acts of kindness, charity, and moral leadership.
