Peregrine Messenger
6th-level Conjuration
Casting Time: 1 minute
Range: Unlimited (target creature must be on the same plane)
Components: V, S, M (a miniature peregrine falcon figurine)
Duration: 24 hours (no concentration)
Class: Druid, Wizard
You summon a magical homunculus that takes the form of a peregrine falcon, designed to deliver a single written message. It uses the statistics of a peregrine falcon, but it is a construct, immune to exhaustion, and can gain or lose the Invisible condition at will. Its Intelligence is 10, and its Insight skill bonus is equal to yours. It can speak any language you know, but only speaks to carry out its delivery task. It can track its target as though by using locate creature. Effects which foil that spell foil the homunculus.
It appears with a scroll 6 in. x 12 in. that fills with the message that you decade. You also tell the homunculus a sender’s name (which may be fictitious) and choose a target creature you know well. Once you finish your message, it furls up and the homunculus takes it in its claws. It gains the Invisible condition, takes flight, and flies by the most direct route towards its target. It flies at a speed of 100 mph, conditions permitting.
If when it reaches its destination the target cannot be reached— if for example they're indoors without an open entry—it waits invisibly at the nearest likely point of contact. It can identify people likely to assist (using an Insight check), and will ask for help. The spell can end one of three different ways:
Locates the Target. If the falcon locates the target, it lands, announces the given sender name, and drops the scroll where the target can grab it. The spell then ends, leaving the scroll behind. The scroll cannot be used as a spell component.
Waylaid. If the falcon is attacked or grabbed against its will the spell ends and the letter is destroyed.
Cannot Reach the Target. If the falcon is unable to find or reach the target within 24 hours, the spell ends and the scroll is destroyed.
When the spell ends you become immediately aware, and you know whether the delivery succeeded or failed and why.
